Presidency erred in publicising petition to remove CJ – Manhyia South MP

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, on Saturday, criticised the government for making public the petition seeking the removal of the Chief Justice of the Republic, Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

Speaking on Joy FM’s ‘Newsfile’ programme, the MP observed that the decision to publicise such a sensitive matter as the removal of no less a person than the Chief Justice was inappropriate and has the potential to undermine confidence in the judiciary.

According to him, the petition should have been handled with the necessary discretion on the part of the presidency to avoid unnecessary political controversy.

“This constitutional process requires a level of confidentiality, at least in its early stages. Making it public at this point risks politicising the matter and casting doubt on the impartiality of the judiciary,” said Baffour Awuah.

The Presidency early in the week announced forwarding three petitions seeking the removal of the Chief Justice to the Council of State for advice without notifying her.

The Chief Justice subsequently wrote to the President, demanding copies of the three petitions and seven days within which to respond to the petitions.

Owing to the request, the President granted the Chief Justice ten days to review and respond to the allegations in the petitions. Enditem
