The Ghana Navy is investigating a suspected pirate attack on a Ghanaian vessel in high seas, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) said in a statement late Saturday.

The statement signed by E. Aggrey-Quarshie observed that some armed men totalling seven boarded the Ghanaian fishing vessel, assembling everyone on board and confiscating their mobile phones.

The GAF forces indicated that some Chinese nationals have also been kidnapped by the attackers.

“The Ghana Navy is investigating a suspected pirate attack on a Ghanaian fishing vessel, MENGXIN 1, that took place in its waters on the evening of Thursday, 27th March, 2025,” confirmed the GAF.

“At approximately 1753 hours, preliminary reports indicated that seven armed individuals boarded the ship and fired warning shots, prompting several crew members to seek cover in a safe area. The pirates stayed on board for about three hours after assembling everyone on deck and confiscating their mobile phones,” it explained.

The Ghana Armed Forces further noted, “Following their departure, the crew came out of hiding to find the Captain, Chief Mate, and Chief Engineer, all Chinese nationals, missing, who are suspected of being kidnapped by the attackers. The crew had to sail closer to land before reporting the event because there was no mobile network coverage at sea.”

The statement further emphasized that the rest of the crew members are safe and the ship has now safely docked at the Tema Fishing Harbour, with the Marine Police and the Eastern Naval Command’s Naval Intelligence personnel also conducting their initial interrogations, confirming the incident and the suspected abduction.

The GAF also observed that information on the incident has been shared with neighbouring countries through the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Multinational Maritime Coordination Centre (MMCC) Zone F in Accra, under the Yaounde Architecture for maritime security.

It added all efforts are being made by the Ghanaian authorities to locate and free the crew members of the fishing vessel. Enditem
