The Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has spoken for the first time since she was admitted and treated at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) over the weekend.
According to a statement issued from the Office of the Vice President on Monday, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang extended best wishes to Muslims on the celebration of Eid-Ul-Fitr.
“On this blessed occasion, I extend my warmest wishes to you and your families. Your dedication, values, and contributions enrich our nation and the world. May this celebration bring you joy, peace, and renewed strength,” added the statement.
She also expressed her deep gratitude to Ghanaians for their kindness and support during the brief period she was taken ill.
“Likewise, I would like to say thank you to everyone for the kind sentiments and well wishes this weekend,” said the Vice President.
Vice President Nana Jane Opoku-Agyemang received treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre on Saturday due to sudden illness, the Presidency confirmed in a statement early Sunday.
The statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, announced the Vice President will be seeking further care abroad based on expert medical advice.
“The Vice President, Her Excellency Nana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, received treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre on Saturday due to a sudden illness that occurred after work on Friday, March 28, 2025,” said the statement.
“Based on expert medical opinion, she will be seeking further care abroad. We wish the Vice President a speedy recovery,” added the statement.
Opoku-Agyemang, 73, is the first female Vice President of Ghana and the seventh under the country’s fourth republican dispensation.
She assumed office on January 7 this year during the inauguration of John Dramani Mahama as the president of Ghana.
She previously served as Minister for Education under the first Mahama administration between 2013 and 2017. Enditem
