Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams has extended his condolences to the government and people of Nigeria over the death of their boxer in Ghana, a statement released here late Monday said.

The statement signed by minister described the circumstances surrounding the passing of the Nigerian boxer in the ring on Ghanaian soil as unfortunate.

“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I, on behalf of the Ministry of Sports & Recreation and the government of Ghana, extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the Nigerian boxer, Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who tragically passed away following his contest at the Bukom Boxing Arena,” said Adams.

“We deeply empathize with the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBBC), the entire Nigerian boxing fraternity, and the global boxing community over the irreplaceable loss. Gabriel’s untimely departure not only deprives boxing of an admirable competitor but also reminds us of the unpredictable nature of the sport we passionately love,” added the statement.

The Ghanaian government stressed the need to use the incident to work to protect athletes across the continent.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Gabriel’s family, his fellow athletes, and all affected by this tragedy. May we all find solace during this difficult period and continue to work together to safeguard the well-being of athletes across the continent,” the minister further stated.

The minister, on behalf of the government and the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), pledged their full cooperation to ensure a thorough investigation and to support efforts aimed at improving the safety of athletes.

31-year-old Nigerian boxer Olanrewaju died in the ring after suffering a fatal seizure during a boxing bout against his Ghanaian counterpart, John Mbanugu, at the Bukom boxing arena in the national capital, Accra, late Saturday.

Subsequently, the Ghana Boxing Authority issued a statement confirming the incident. Enditem
