World Bank says no projects in Ghana currently suspended

The World Bank says it has not suspended any of its funded projects in Ghana, this is according to a statement released here Thursday.

In a brief but unambiguous statement released, the global financial institution stated unequivocally that none of its funded projects in Ghana are currently suspended.

This clarification comes amidst recent reports in the Ghanaian media suggesting that certain World Bank-funded initiatives in the West African country may have been halted due to financial or governance issues.

“No projects in the World Bank-financed portfolio in Ghana are currently suspended,” said the statement.

Some media outlets in the country reported two major World Bank-funded projects, a 200 million U.S. dollar Tree Crops Diversification Project and another 200 million U.S. dollar Ghana Digital Acceleration Project (GDAP), have been suspended following the dismissal of key personnel by the new government.

The terminations, the report emphasized, were carried out without adherence to World Bank protocols, raising concerns about the future of these initiatives.

The clarification by the World Bank however reassures stakeholders, including government agencies, development partners, and beneficiaries, that all projects under the World Bank’s portfolio in the country remain active and operational.

The statement is likely aimed at quelling any uncertainty, particularly as the cocoa-growing, gold, and oil-extracting country continues to navigate economic recovery efforts and seeks to boost investor confidence.

The Ghanaian government has over the years relied on multilateral institutions like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for financial support and policy guidance. Enditem
