NPP demands update on suspected drug trafficking, money laundering

By Ghana Eye Report

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is urging the government to update Ghanaians on allegations of suspected drug trafficking and money laundering at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

A statement issued here Sunday signed by Richard Ahiagbah, Director of Communications for the NPP, observed that the explanation given by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister for Government Communications, has not met public expectations.

According to the party, the response by the minister which has been scanty and primarily defensive, has deepened public suspicion and concern.

“The New Patriotic Party vehemently condemns the government’s intimidation of the minority, who have expressed valid concerns regarding the unexplained presence of specific foreign aircraft in Ghana. We expect a detailed, professional response from the government led by the appropriate security agencies regarding the mission and cargo on board the aircraft,” said the statement.

“In addition, we demand that the government provide an update on the status of two major drug trafficking cases: the $350 million cocaine bust in Cape Coast and the $150 million cocaine seizure in Sekondi,” added the statement.

The NPP further noted that the political explanations given by the Minister for Government Communications have failed to address the request for an update on such drug arrests.

According to the party, “the silence on these high-profile arrests undermine public trust, particularly given the alleged involvement of a senior member of the NDC.”

The NPP urged the government not to trivialize the matter which is on international interest, as the global community is observing to see how Ghana would handle the matter.

Member of Parliament for the Assin South Constituency, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, recently raised alarm over alleged drug trafficking and money laundering at the Kotoka International Airport and called on the government to provide detailed information to Ghanaians on the matter.

The President subsequently directed the security agencies to collaborate with the MP to get to the bottom of the matter. Enditem
