APL urges govt to constitute bi-partisan committee to investigate cocaine scandal

Policy think tank, Africa Policy Lens (APL) has called on the government to constitute a bi-partisan committee to investigate allegations of issues of drug trafficking in the country.

Reacting to the issue, the founding President of APL, Dr. George Domfe, asked the government to, as a matter of urgency, constitute a committee to delve into the issues since Ghana’s international reputation is being destroyed by accusations and counterclaims.

“President John Dramani Mahama must, with immediate effect, liaise with the Parliament to constitute a bi-partisan committee to examine, investigate, and get to the bottom of this worrying issue. He should do this without delay because Ghana’s name is being dragged into the mud” Dr. Domfe stated.

He further said that the inconsistencies in the reports by government officials, coupled with the different planes and their tail numbers make it imperative for a bi-partisan inquiry to unravel the facts of the matter.

“It is very concerning that the Minister of Government’s Communications posts about the Covak aircraft have been contradictory. This is the more reason why there should be a thorough investigation into these matters to ascertain whether or not there is truth in what the opposition is claiming” he stated.

The President of APL noted further emphasized that the repercussions of allowing these rumours unexplained are enormous and must be tackled head-on.

“If these issues are not further investigated, they could lead to the international community and investors losing confidence in the country. It could also lead to some diplomatic fallouts with countries that frown upon narcotics,” he added.

Dr. Domfe advised the government to treat this cocaine brouhaha with swift action to save the image of the country internationally. Enditem
