The Minority in Parliament has called on the Ghanaian government to demonstrate greater urgency and decisiveness in dealing with the situation in Bawku, this is according to a statement signed by Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Ranking Member on the Committee on Defence and Interior Friday.
According to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus in Parliament, the deteriorating situation in the Upper East town is of national concern and urged the government to take immediate action to prevent further escalation.
“It is evident that the current approach to addressing the Bawku conflict has not been sufficient to restore calm. The government must demonstrate greater urgency and decisiveness. The deteriorating situation in Bawku is a national concern, and the government must take immediate action to prevent further escalation,” said the statement.
“The people of Bawku deserve to live in peace and security, and we urge the government to prioritize a sustainable resolution to this crisis before it spirals further out of control,” added the statement.
The Minority expressed worry about the growing sophistication of weaponry used by the warring factions involved in the conflict.
The Bawku conflict, which has lingered for years, has seen a resurgence of violence, prompting national concern and renewed calls for lasting peace.
Meanwhile, President John Mahama on Friday assured that the Asantehene-led peace mediation process, spearheaded by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will resume next week as part of intensified efforts to restore calm in the conflict-hit Bawku area. Enditem
