Uganda’s 4x400m relay team has qualified for the 2025 World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China, scheduled for May 10-11, a sports official said Saturday.
This marks Uganda’s debut at the World Athletics Relays, which also serve as a qualifier for the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
Dominic Otuchet, president of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), said that World Athletics confirmed Uganda’s qualification.
“This is very good news because our team has been waiting for the confirmation since several teams around the world set times and World Athletics was reviving them. This will also be the first time that Uganda sends a team to the World Athletics Relays,” said Otuchet.
He explained the UAF’s excitement over the breakthrough. “Our team will also have the opportunity to compete with the best and have a chance to qualify for the World Athletics Championships which will be held in Tokyo in September 2025,” he added.
The Ugandan team comprises Harold Adoli, Godfrey Chanwengo, Shida Leni, and Maureen Banura.
Otuchet expressed optimism about the team’s potential to improve their times and secure a World Championships berth despite their debut.
Uganda will face stiff competition from top mixed relay teams like the United States, Netherlands, and Ireland, which excelled at the 2024 event in the Bahamas. Enditem
