Women’s group, Christian Mothers Association of Ghana, has condemned the suspension of Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo by the President, a statement released here Wednesday said.

The comment comes on the back of the decision taken by President John Dramani Mahama to suspend the Chief Justice after a prima facie case has been determined by the Council of State.

According to the group, the action by the president sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the foundation of the country’s democracy.

“The Christian Mothers Association of Ghana stands united in our condemnation of the recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo by President John Mahama. This action sets a dangerous precedent that undermines the very foundation of our democracy,” said the statement.

The women’s group appealed to the president to reconsider his action in order to restore faith in the country’s judicial system.

“We call upon President John Mahama to reconsider this decision and to restore faith in our judicial system. Let us remember that true leadership is rooted in integrity and respect for the rule of law,” added the statement.

The group also urged all right-thinking Ghanaians and the international community to join them in denouncing what they described as “unjust decision.”

Three individuals submitted different petitions seeking the removal of the Chief Justice from office to the president a few weeks ago.

In accordance with Article 146 (6) of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana, the president forwarded the petition to the Council of State to determine whether it merits a prima facie and advise him accordingly.

After studying the petitions, the Council of State established a prima facie case on which the president relied to suspend the Chief Justice.

The president subsequently set up a five-member committee chaired by Supreme Court Judge, Justice Gabriel Pwamang, to investigate the matter to determine whether or not to remove the Chief Justice. Enditem
