Romeo Obugyei, Managing Director (MD) for Indigenous Ghanaian tech company IT Consortium, on Friday urged journalists, innovators, and regulators to incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) responsibly in their fields of work as the country marks World Press Freedom Day.
He advised during a familiarization visit by members of the Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists (IFEJ) to the tech company facilitated by the United Kingdom Ghana Chamber of Commerce (UKGCC) as part of activities marking this year’s Press Freedom Day.
According to him, artificial intelligence is transforming the media landscape and has profound implications for financial journalism and economic stability.
“This year’s theme: Reporting in the brave new world: Artificial Intelligence on press freedom and media” is both timely and urgent. Artificial Intelligence is transforming the landscape of financial reporting, media integrity, and news consumption. From algorithmic trading insights to automated news generation, the implications for financial journalism, and by extension, economic stability are profound,” said Mr. Obugyei.
“As IT Consortium, we are committed to innovation that brings value to our patrons, serves people, markets, and truth. We believe in the power of partnerships with journalists, regulators, and innovators to ensure that technology, including AI, is used ethically and responsibly,” he added.
The IT Consortium MD further reminded media practitioners to ensure that the principles of truth, fairness, and integrity must remain the standard, whether in the markets, media, or machines.
Communications Manager for the UKGCC, Joscelyn Ahiable, stressed the crucial role that the media play in the socio-economic development of the country, hence their close working relationship with IFEJ.
She enumerated the benefits that the relationship between her outfit and IFEJ has brought about over the years.
“Since 2021, the UKGCC has been working closely with the media, especially through IFEJ, to facilitate relationships between them and our member companies. We have done this through webinars and company visits to commemorate World Press Freedom Day, an important day that celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom around the world,” said Ahiable.
“Through this relationship, we have been able to deliver relevant information to our member companies and advocate on their behalf. The relationship has also resulted in increased public visibility for the member companies we have visited and given the companies an opportunity to share their commitment to supporting the media in Ghana,” she added.
President of the IFEJ, Mr. Rayborn Bulley, expressed the gratitude of the journalists for the opportunity to learn at first hand the successes of some of these indigenous companies to provide the basis of upholding the ethics of journalism.
The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 to be World Press Freedom Day, a day observed to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right of freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
It is also marking the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration, a statement of free press principles put together by African newspaper journalists in Windhoek in 1991.
This year’s Press Freedom Day is being celebrated under the theme: “Reporting in the brave new world: Artificial Intelligence on press freedom and media.” Enditem
