Egypt and Uganda are on their way to the FIFA U-17 World Cup Qatar 2025™ after posting victories in the CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations play-off matches. The four third-place teams from the group stage took part in the play-off to determine CAF’s final two representatives in the global showcase this November.
The day started with Uganda qualifying for their first U-17 World Cup with a 2-1 triumph over The Gambia. Not even a minute had ticked off the clock when The Gambia struck for the first goal, with Ahmed Njundu Kanyi finding the back of the net.
Uganda responded with aplomb and held a 2-1 lead at half-time thanks to goals from star striker James Bogere in the 13th and 33rd minutes. From there the Uganda defence took over and saw things out to clinch their historical qualification.
The second play-off of the day saw Egypt down Angola 2-1 to book their spot. The young Pharaohs broke the deadlock when Abdel Aziz El Zoghby’s effort took a deflection and rippled the net in the 39th minute. Hamza Mohamed Abdel Karim then tacked on an insurance score in the 69th with a shot that banked in off the post.
Angola launched a late comeback bid and pulled to within 2-1 in the 83rd minute courtesy of Lourenco Jose Didissa, but Egypt would hang on to pocket the victory and World Cup berth.
The newly-expanded U-17 World Cup, which will feature 48 teams for the first time, will be held from 3-27 November. Enditem
