Free dialysis programme continues until ‘Mahama Cares Initiative’ becomes operational – NHIA

By Ghana Eye Report

The free dialysis programme started by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration continues until the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as the ‘Mahama Cares Initiative,’ becomes operational; this is according to the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) on Friday.

The statement, signed by Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the NHIA, comes in the wake of rumours of the free dialysis programme being suspended by the John Mahama-led administration.

The development thus offers much relief and hope to thousands of patients with kidney disease under the free dialysis programme.

“The National Health Insurance Authority wishes to assure the public that the free dialysis programme under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is ongoing and will continue until the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, also known as the Mahama Cares Initiative, becomes fully operational,” said the statement.

The NHIA explained that a seven-member committee has been established by the Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to oversee the successful implementation of the initiative.

The Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, an initiative of President John Dramani Mahama, aims to support the cost of care for individuals with chronic diseases, including kidney failure, which requires dialysis, cancers, and heart diseases.

This commitment, the NHIA observes aligns with their mandate to ensure accessible and affordable healthcare for all, particularly for patients with kidney disease who rely on dialysis treatment.

“We remain committed to collaborating closely with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless transition once the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund is fully established and operational,” the NHIA further stated.

The Authority expressed its gratitude for the support and cooperation of all healthcare providers and beneficiaries as it continued to improve upon healthcare delivery in the country.

The free dialysis programme, launched on December 1, 2024, is a direct initiative of the government through the NHIA.

The programme covers all renal disease patients who are members of the National Health Insurance Scheme.

It is funded by the Ghana government through annual budgetary allocations, development partners, and corporate bodies. Enditem
