I’m under pressure to prosecute, but I won’t rush to court – AG

By Ghana Eye Report

There is so much pressure on me to prosecute officials of the erstwhile Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration, Attorney-General (AG) and Minister for Justice Dr. Dominic Ayine said on Monday.

Despite the enormous pressure on him, the AG said he would not rush to court especially when he has not gathered all the facts and evidence in the various alleged corruption cases.

“Ghanaians are in a hurry to know what we are doing about holding people who have looted state resources accountable. Yes, sometimes you may have some of your colleagues’ saying things are not going as quickly as you wanted, but I have said that I will not rush on any matter,” said Dr. Ayine.

“The issue of accountability and ORAL was a central plank of His Excellency’s campaign. In fact, the NDC campaigned seriously on the issue of accountability. Ghanaians bought into that campaign and other issues, which is why they voted for us to hold those who have abused the public office accountable, so yes, I am under pressure, but I am under pressure not from political quarters but from ordinary Ghanaians. So yes, the pressure is there but I am soaking in the pressure together with my able deputy and the staff,” he added.

The Attorney General briefed the media on ongoing investigations being conducted by his office after the Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) team presented its final report on suspected corruption matters.

President Mahama on February 10 charged the Minister of Justice and Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine to commence investigations into the cases of corruption captured in the report of the ORAL team.

The ORAL team presented its final report to the president at the seat of government in Accra on Monday, February 10.

The formation of ORAL was a campaign promise that then candidate Mahama gave ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Following the NDC’s victory in the elections, President Mahama set up ORAL but quickly clarified that the team was not mandated to investigate anyone but served as a focal point for collecting evidence of corruption. The evidence will then be passed on to state institutions for action.

Touching on the arrest of former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau, the Attorney-General expressed the view that Kwabena Adu Boahen should still be in custody but his wife can be released on bail.

The view expressed, he noted, was based on intelligence that he has received so far on the dealings of Mr. Adu Boahen.

“With respect to Adu Boahen, I got a brief last night and I am thinking that he should continue to stay in detention. If we are granting the wife and other suspects bail, he should continue to stay in detention because of what has come to my knowledge so I have advised EOCO to vary the bail terms or release him and we will go to court in order to meet the 48-hour constitutional threshold, maybe likely today,”

Dr. Dominic Ayine warned all banks to desist from moving any assets or money belonging to Mr Adu Boahen and his wife. Enditem
