Thirty-one-year-old Nigerian boxer, Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewagu, died after suffering a fatal seizure during a boxing bout against Ghana’s John Mbanugu at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, the Ghanaian capital late Saturday.
The Nigerian boxer, popularly known as ‘Success,’ was competing against the Ghanaian, also known as “Power,” in an undercard bout of Ghana’s professional boxing league when the incident happened.
A viral video of the fight showed both boxers exchanging powerful punches before Olanrewaju staggered and collapsed, hitting his head on the ring.
Match officials immediately rushed to his aid and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in an attempt to revive him, but despite urgent efforts by the medical staff to revive him, he was later pronounced dead, with reports suggesting he may have suffered a cardiac arrest.
According to the World Boxing Association (WBA), Olanrewaju, born in Lagos, has had 22 professional fights before the last one, winning 13, with 12 victories coming by knockouts.
However, he had been struggling in recent years, losing four fights in a row before his last match.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) is expected to release an official statement on the incident. Enditem
