The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has released two Members of Parliament to appear before officials of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in Parliament, a letter by the Parliamentary Service addressed to the Director General of the National Security Council said.
The letter signed by Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietor, observed that following the request by the NIB, the Speaker has ordered the release of Mustapha Yussif, former Minister for Sports and MP for Yagaba Kubore Constituency, and Kwame Asare Obeng, alias A Plus, MP for Gomoa Central Constituency.
According to the communication, the two parliamentarians were to meet officials of the National Security on April 7, 2025, in Parliament.
“Please refer to your letter dated 25th of March 2025 in respect of a request for the release of Mustapha Yussif and Kwame Asare Obeng. I am directed by the Rt. Hon. Speaker to inform you that having regard to the limitations of Articles 117 and 118 of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic, the existing protocols established with the security and intelligence agencies, and also the public interest, Parliament, in principle, agrees to the request in the above matter,” said the statement.
“Accordingly, the Rt. Hon. Speaker has directed the Honourable Members to make themselves available for the preliminary interaction with your officials in Parliament on Monday, 7th April 2025, at 10.00 am at the Sir Emmanuel Charles Quist Conference Room, Office of the Speaker. The Hon. Members will be requested to have their lawyers present at the interaction,” it added.
The letter did not state the reason(s) why the two legislators will be interacting with officials of the NIB; however, sources have told the Ghana Eye Report that it concerns some public statements made by the MPs regarding some recent security matters in the country. Enditem
