Members of the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG), formerly the Coalition of Concerned Teachers – Ghana (CCT-Gh), have expressed their outrage over the appointment of Prof. Smile Gavua Dzisi as Deputy General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), according to a statement released late Thursday.

According to the group, Prof. Dzisi’s appointment, which they consider a ‘stranger,’ does not align with the association’s professional values and principles.

“We, the members of the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana, are compelled to express our utmost disappointment and disgust at the recent appointment of Prof. Smile Gavua Dzisi as the Deputy General of the Ghana Education Service,” said the statement.

“The appointment is unacceptable to us, and we strongly believe it does not align with the professional values and principles that PRETAG upholds. We hold the view that the pre-tertiary level of our educational system has enough qualified persons to occupy such positions in the Ghana Education Service,” added the statement.

The teacher union expressed its outrage at the practice in times past where political leaders of this country have appointed ‘strangers’ to occupy top positions within the GES, describing it as unfortunate and undermining their collective interest and well-being.

PRETAG called on the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, to as a matter of urgency, liaise with the relevant appointing authority to reconsider this and other appointments of the same challenges to ensure that “the Ghana Education Service is led by individuals who have gone through the pre-tertiary education system and possesses the requisite experience and passion for education.”

It would be recalled that the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo-led government appointed Dr. Eric Nkansah as Director General of the GES in October 2022.

His appointment received widespread criticisms from pre-tertiary teacher unions describing him as an outsider. Enditem
