Vice President Opoku-Agyemang seeks treatment abroad over sudden illness—Presidency

The Vice President, Prof. Nana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, on Saturday, received treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) due to a sudden illness, the Presidency confirmed in a statement early Sunday.

The statement, signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, announced that the Vice President will seek further care abroad based on expert medical advice.

“The Vice President, Her Excellency Nana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, received treatment at the University of Ghana Medical Centre on Saturday due to a sudden illness that occurred after work on Friday, March 28, 2025,” said the statement.

“Based on expert medical opinion, she will be seeking further care abroad. We wish the Vice President a speedy recovery,” added the statement.

Opoku-Agyemang, 73, is the first female Vice President of Ghana and the seventh under the country’s fourth republican dispensation.

She assumed office on January 7 this year during the inauguration of John Dramani Mahama as the president of Ghana.

She previously served as Minister for Education under the first Mahama administration between 2013 and 2017. Enditem
