‘We’ll give you priority recruitment into the police service’ – IGP to Bawku youth

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno on Friday appealed to the youth of Bawku in the Upper East region to embrace peace, assuring them of priority in police recruitment as part of efforts to restore calm in the conflict-stricken area.

During a visit to the conflict area on April 11, IGP Yohuno highlighted the dedication and resilience of the people of Bawku, emphasizing that a special recruitment team would be deployed to the region to provide opportunities specifically for its youth.

“When it comes to recruitment, we will give the people of Bawku priority. We will give the youth of Bawku priority, and so for that matter, a special team will come here to do special recruitment for the youth of Bawku,” said the Inspector General of Police.

He also expressed his eagerness to work closely with the community, calling on residents to point out any grievances or mistakes made by the police.

The IGP assured them that corrective actions would be taken swiftly to build trust and improve collaboration.

“I know how hardworking people from this area are. So, we are pleading with you—just let us know where we are going wrong so we can quickly correct those things and make sure that you continue to work with our people diligently. Where we have done something wrong, forgive us. We won’t repeat those things again,” he added.

The Upper East regional town of Bawku is predominantly inhabited by the Kusasis and Mamprusis.

The conflict between these groups has its roots in historical tensions, competition over resources, and political conflicts. The Bawku conflict is a long-standing conflict involving a struggle for traditional leadership between the two main ethnic groups.

The tension in the township escalated further on Thursday, April 10, after unidentified youth vandalized and set fire to the residence of Bawku Central Member of Parliament (MP) and Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga.

The incident occurred amid ongoing unrest linked to Bawku’s long-standing chieftaincy dispute.

The latest act of violence follows Wednesday’s deadly clash between youth groups and law enforcement, which left one person dead, with several others injured. Enditem
